Heathland Restoration

The lowland heathland in Sutton Park is very precious as the UK retains less than 20% of the heathland which was present in 1800.  It is an endangered habitat worldwide and is home to many specialist species such as the amazing emperor moth and the ‘hard to spot’ nightjar.

If they are not cleared, the birch trees outcompete the specialist heathland species such as heather and gorse  and this leads to a loss of habitat for heathland insects, animals and birds.

Friends of Sutton Park Association (FoSPA) is a volunteer-led, not-for-profit, non-political organisation working alongside the Park Rangers and organisations with vested interest in the Park.

We host volunteering sessions within Sutton Park and we also hold regular walks and talks about Sutton Park, its history and its inhabitants.
